Like many other people I watched President Obama’s live address Sunday night about the killing of Osama Bin Laden. I think the speech was well delivered and did a lot for him (as proven by his approval rating increasing). I did feel it was a bit long but I understand he wanted to address certain people and thank others; he wanted to remember those who were lost on September 11, 2001 and those who have died fighting in the war against terrorism.
However, I feel like one key thing that was left out during his address and that was verification and because of that there is speculation and conspiracy theories going around. President Obama should have said somewhere in his address that they had DNA evidence/ DNA verification/ DNA results …. any wording he decided to pick would have been fine. My cousin assured me that Obama would not make this announcement if it wasn’t 100 percent sure (which I agree with) but why would he not state that there was DNA results (seems like a no brainer to me)? I’m sure I am not the only person who caught that slip.
Now NDP MPs are doubting photos, Osama’s wife was killed, but then she wasn’t Osama’s wife. Was she a civilian? Didn’t Obama say there were no civilian causalities? Afghanistan says Pakistan had to know of the location of Osama; Pakistan denies this. The details about the mission have been altered? Who knows? I think much of this could have been avoided, had President Obama done his speech Sunday night, added that there was DNA evidence proving it was Osama Bin Laden and then nothing more. Let Americans celebrate how they choose to but I don’t believe anything more had to be said or released.
I do believe Osama is dead. I take Obama’s word on it. I’m happy, end of story. I don’t need the details (which were released), I don’t need photos (which thankfully weren’t released, smart decision Obama).
The world has heightened security in fear of a retaliation and people want details and pictures? Lets rejoice silently. Photos don’t prove anything, as I’m sure Osama had many look a likes, that’s why I believe they should just release the DNA results. Also, we don’t need the details. You did it Obama, you and a team of very brave and courageous Americans. Keep it at that. Award them but keep your successful mission a secret. There is no need to know how these top secret, security teams operate. They save of our lives while risking theirs. They are brave, they are heroes. They don’t do it for the glory.
I do fear that a retaliation is very likely. I know Obama says America has top notch security but how can you expect a terrorist attack? How do you catch it? Or stop it? I’m sure there are Al Qaeda members living in the United States, as I believe there are in Canada and London and many countries all across the globe. I don’t believe these attacks have a high success rate of being caught beforehand but really what do I know about how security works in Canada, United States or other countries in the world.
I just think some things are better left unsaid and unpublished. I hope this issue settles down soon. As I don’t want media coverage to come across as bragging to anyone who would threaten America or Canada or other great countries in this world.
This as always is just my opinion. I know Osama Bin Laden is a sensitive subject. I know people’s opinions about President Obama vary. You are free to disagree as I’m sure there are people who will. However, let’s be respectful. We are all entitled to express our opinions.
