Keep your heads up boys

We’re still proud of you. Sure, giving away a penalty shot in the what, the 88th minute sure sucked, you still played well. If you aren’t sure what I am referring to, I am talking about the international friendly soccer game which was played between Portugal and Argentina today. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1. Which should not have been the case.

If Alemida focused more on aiming then on trying to get a penalty shot, we would have been a head much sooner and that could have changed the whole momentum of the game. But we did well, I’m proud of us. I love our new goalie, I think he’s going to be great for our squad.

But lets take a moment to compare the sides. Portugal's best finish in a large scale tournament was second place in 2004’s European Cup and lets face it, if Brazil and Argentina were allowed in that tournament (however I completely understand why not, EUROpean Cup) Portugal wouldn’t have come close to that second place finish. But nicely done boys, I was proud of you. In a World Cup, our best finish is fourth place and that was in 2006 in Germany. Whoa, just in, after a bit of research and Wikipedia its been found out that Portugal finished third in 1966, boo yaa!!! Proud of ya boys.

Anyway, you take a look at Argentina and you’ve got quite an impressive record. They’ve won the World Cup twice and Copa America (for South American countries, similiar to Euro Cup) fourteen times. Holy crap!! However I’d argue that besides Brazil and Mexico there are easier teams in Copa America then Euro Cup where you have teams like Italy, France, England, Germany and Spain.
I came across something funny though as I was checking my soccer figures. Go to this website, click here. It’s about a game that was played in the 2006 World Cup between Portugal and Netherlands where 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards were given out, a new record. Now if you aren’t familiar with soccer, that’s not good at all. Zero cards = great. Lots of cards = suspension and fines. But I love that this game alone has its own Wikipedia page, too funny.

Till tomorrow.
