“Who knows?” is going to be the answer given in Calgary. There is currently a debate about getting rid of scorekeeping for soccer in the under 12 leagues. What a bad idea. They want to do this to take the emphasis off competition and try to control overly enthusiastic parents.
Stupid. If you have a problem with parents, find a way to deal with the parents. Competition is healthy. Competition encourages working harder. Soccer is a game. Games have scores. There is a winner and there is a loser. If people do not like this, sign your children for something else. Maybe get rid of score keeping in house league soccer but not competitive soccer.
This is a great point by “Mark O’Hearn, who coaches an under-10 team, said that parents enroll their kids in competitive sports for a reason.
‘They need to learn how to win and they need to learn how to lose. By constantly trying to protect our children, we’re not teaching them anything, we’re actually damaging them,’ he said. ‘Scoring and winning does matter. It’s not the end goal — the coaches and parents still focus on fun — but you need to play hard.’”
They want to wait till the age of 15 before keeping score. Is this eventually going to be for all sports. By the age of 15, that’s grade 10 or so these athletes could be using sports to support their education. Scores and stats are important.
Great athletes are not going to be made this way. There is competition in almost every facet of life. People have to work harder then other people all the time. We can’t start developing this trait at 15. I feel like this debate is almost too ridiculous to discuss but I’m an athlete, I’ve played on sport teams my whole life. I’ve played on some number 1 teams and I’ve played on some pretty crappy teams. You learn from both experiences.
