Movie Review: No Strings Attached

I don’t know if too many people told me this movie was good or that I had seen Natalie Portman do some interviews about it but I definitely didn’t love it as much as I thought I would. Like I laughed quite a bit but I think its the happy ending that threw me off and turned it back into chick flick territory.

Unless it’s a great chick flick, happy endings really annoy me because real life never works out that way. There’s only a few select chick flicks I like and I expected this to be a man’s version of a chick flick. Also I read an interview Natalie did, stating this movie was very different than other chick flicks and that she hadn’t done a chick flick because she doesn’t like how women are represented and thinks women don’t have good roles in these types of movies.

Besides Natalie being a doctor, I’m not sure how great her role was for women. Just because she didn’t want a relationship doesn’t make it a great role. It’s like they turned her into the “man” who doesn’t want a relationship, doesn’t want to trust, feel or let people in and they made Ashton the “girl” who tells her he loves her first, wants the relationship and it the one hurt by Natalie. I didn’t like the role reversal.

They could have done that better somehow. Natalie was still portrayed as a crazy girl. But she wasn’t a crazy girl who wanted a relationship (in most chick flicks), she was a crazy girl who didn’t want a relationship.

I think the thing I enjoyed most was seeing Ashton interact with his guy friends, getting their advice on things and Natalie’s hair. I love listening to guy chat, it’s so funny to hear the way they interpret a situation and how women do, often at completely different ends of the spectrum.

However, the movie is funny. I laughed out loud several times. I think it was the happy ending and Natalie’s character that has left a sour taste in my mouth about the movie. So overall,

3 and a half

Till tomorrow.
